Pie Five Pizza Crust Controversy Resolved!

When Pie Five Pizza opened at College Park last semester, all the crust varieties were vegan–meaning vegan students (and lactose-intolerant students) could order the specialty Treehugger pie, or any custom veggie pizza sans cheese. However, this semester, there has been some discussion that the company has changed their crust recipes to include dairy.

Saddened by the sudden cutoff from my only source of vegan pizza on campus, I immediately contacted the company in hopes of hearing otherwise. They were quite helpful in their response and I was reassured to learn that vegan students can still go to Pie Five for all their pizza needs on campus.

After checking with their company’s chef, Pie Five confirmed that the recipes have indeed been changed for the pan crust, signature thin crust and gluten-free crust. Now, the pan and signature thin crusts both contain dairy, while the gluten-free crust contains honey.

A loaded veggie pie on the Italian Herb crust, with Tuscan Marinara sauce. My toppings consisted of minced garlic, spinach, artichokes, mushrooms, pineapples, red onions, banana peppers, black olives, red bell peppers and diced tomatoes. After the pizza was cooked, it was topped with fresh basil and a drizzle of tomato basil sauce.

However, Pie Five’s representatives were happy to inform me that their Italian Herb crust is still vegan! They apologized for the mis-communication and also let me know that they are currently testing a vegan, whole grain crust option at their Denton location. This option may be offered at all their locations in the future, depending on how well it is received. I can’t wait for that option to become available!

So to conclude: vegans, we can rejoice, because the Treehugger can still be ordered on the Italian Herb crust. I personally prefer building a custom pie so I can load up on all the vegetables (extra mushrooms and olives, please). What are your favorite veggie pizza combinations? Please share them with me below!

If you are thinking of taking a study break and getting a vegan pizza, Pie Five is offering a special right now–two pies for the price of one. The offer lasts until Monday.

Please come back soon to read more about other vegan dining options at College Park–Pho Xpress is coming up next!

Update, 11/10/13: Pie Five now has whole wheat crust available, and it’s vegan!

You are welcome! It was my pleasure. 🙂
Diggs and Smiling Moose have some pretty decent options! I will be doing a couple of posts outlining the vegan options they have for us.

Just a clarification: Pie Five’s gluten free crust is vegan. The company that makes the crusts, Smart Flour Foods, replaced honey with agave at the end of 2012. For a full list of ingredients in these gluten free crusts, check out their website: http://www.smartflourfoods.com
