Lemon Lavender Candied Ginger for Chinese New Year (Mứt Gừng)

Like any new year celebration, Chinese New Year is about new beginnings. Sweet treats are popular cross-culturally, as they symbolize a sweet, joyful start to the upcoming year. I think we can all agree that we definitely need more joy this year. This year, I was honored to be invited by the lovely Christine (Vermilion Roots) to participate in a Chinese New Year sweets party with several other Asian bloggers. It’s kind of like a virtual potluck—I urge you to check out the participating blogs below, to get a taste of the lunar new year from various parts of Asia! Continue reading

Winter Drinks For Definition Fitness Magazine | Outtakes

The holidays aren’t complete without sibling disagreements about silly things, like what kind of Christmas music to listen to…

Anna: What is this? Is this even a Christmas song??
Me: Well, most of the songs on this playlist aren’t classic Christmas songs, but I really like them because they capture the essence of Christmas for me…
Anna: Ann, I want ACTUAL Christmas songs, not this indie nonsense!
Me: But these are so dreamy…! Ok, fine.
Anna: Ooh, Silent Night, something I recognize!
Me: Oh yes! But it’s in German…
Anna *shaking her head*: Ann, PLEASE!

This exchange with my sister made us both laugh and resulted in a playlist with songs we both like…I hope you enjoy it.

For me, Christmas season is a time to cherish with loved ones, and a time for personal spiritual reflection. Whatever you celebrate, I hope you’re making the best of the holidays!

Since it’s Christmas Eve, I figure today is a good day to share my favorite outtakes from a dreamy recipe shoot I did for Definition Fitness Magazine’s winter issue. For the issue, I developed some unique winter drink recipes (not your average hot chocolate). Check them out below–I had a blast styling and shooting these! I’ve been wanting to share them with you for a while.

Chai Spiced Pear Tarts With Crushed Pumpkin Seeds

This recipe post is coming to you from a very sleepy but determined grad student…lately, my life has consisted of 12-hour long days working on final project stuff at school. I’ve still got a long way to go until it’s all over! Anyway, I’m sorry for my absence of content this month–I’ve missed blogging so much.

I want to let you guys know I just published my first Buzzfeed Community post–a curated list of visually stunning crowd-pleasers for your upcoming potlucks this weekend! I urge you to check it out and show the world that vegan food is wonderful and delicious. 🙂

To me, chai spices represent the quintessential flavors of autumn. These tarts feature fragrant pear slices baked with warm chai spices, in a flaky golden crust. A drizzle of maple sweetness and toasty crushed pumpkin seeds complete the experience. I’ve had this flavor combo in mind for a while and I’m so glad I finally have a moment to share it with you.

Last weekend, my friend and former co-worker Richard came over to catch up and we basically had a creative workshop! Richard actually taught me a lot of basics when I first started getting into DSLR photography. Hanging out with other creatives makes me so happy, especially when we can encourage and learn from each other.

Richard’s a multimedia specialist (check out his work here) and I love all kinds of visual media, so we plan to have more collabs in the future–stay tuned! We spent our day geeking out about photography, sharing our creative aspirations, and playing with food. We made a cozy winter soup (recipe coming soon) and these adorable pastries.

Harry Potter Butterbeer Macaroons // The Plant Philosophy Collab

ICYMI, Margaret (The Plant Philosophy) and I have been getting magical in the kitchen with some Harry Potter themed treats, including Polyjuice Potion and Felix Felicis Potion!

Last week when Margaret and I got together to collaborate on more Harry Potter recipes, we had some issues with our initial recipe ideas. Plus there was a torrential downpour most of the day, so we struggled to get good lighting for our photos. Maybe we would’ve had better luck with a sip of Felix Felicis. 😉

Harry Potter Felix Felicis Potion // The Plant Philosophy Collab

To say that I love Harry Potter would be an understatement. I grew up reading the series and it will always hold a special place in my heart…the stories and the characters will stay with me, until the very end. *sobs* I love it so much.

Naturally, when Margaret (The Plant Philosophy) and I decided to meet and hang out this month, I immediately suggested a Harry Potter recipe collab, in the spirit of Halloween! We decided to put our own spin on a couple of potions from the books: Polyjuice (on Margaret’s blog) and Felix Felicis (below). It was too much fun!

If you’re behind in potions class, don’t worry, I’ll catch you up to speed. Felix Felicis, also known as liquid luck, is a golden concoction that enables the drinker to be successful in everything they pursue.

“Then, slowly but surely, an exhilarating sense of infinite opportunity stole through [Harry]; he felt as though he could have done anything, anything at all…” – Harry Potter and the Half-Blood Prince

Now, this Felix Felicis juice recipe won’t guarantee you magical luck, but it will certainly make you feel refreshed and ready to take on whatever challenges lie ahead in your day. The flavor starts off fresh with bright citrus notes, ending with an invigorating kick of ginger.

Harry Potter Potions | Plant Crush x The Plant Strong Vegan
In the series, Felix Felicis is a difficult potion to brew, taking at least six months. Thankfully for us, this recipe takes almost no time at all to whip up. If you’re making it for a Halloween party, feel free to multiply the recipe to your needs.

4 Ingredient Chai Latte Ice Cream (Nice Cream)

It’s almost the end of October and I don’t know about y’all, but I’m frustrated because fall still hasn’t really hit Texas yet. It’s not hot anymore, but today was humid and muggy. I did a run outside this morning and was feeling all kinds of nope (but at least I got through it)!

It seems like we only get a total of ten days of pleasantly crisp fall weather, before we are plunged unceremoniously into the despairs of winter. But let’s not dwell on that inevitable doom and try to make the best of things…
